PREACHING

21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach[b] to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

-1 Corinthians 1:21-25

God has ordained the preaching of His Word not only that men should be saved, but that they saved should be sanctified through the public proclamation of His Word. In a digital age, where people are less and less connected to one another and false gospels and wicked philosophies have permeated the entire world, the necessity of preaching is as great as ever.

preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

-2 Timothy 4:2-4

WHAT IS PREACHING?

Preaching is the public proclamation of God’s Word.

WHAT IS A SERMON?

A Sermon is essentially a monogue which aims to teach from the bible.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT TYPE OF PREACHING?

The right preaching is expository preaching because this method alone seeks to find the main theme or message of a text of scripture and to then set this same theme or message forth as the main theme of the sermon.

WHAT IS AN EXPOSITORY SERMON?

An expository sermon consists of five elements.

  1. Explain the Text
    • Explain what the text meant to its original audience. Context! Context! Context!
  2. Illustrate The Text
    • Bridge from the original context to the modern world so that the text is understood
  3. Apply The Text
    • Explain why and how the text matters as well as how it is to impact the listeners’ lives.
  4. Exalt Christ From The Text
    • Jesus says that when He is lifted up He will draw all men to Himself. Since He also says that all scripture is about Him, the pastor must show Christ in “this” text.
  5. Proclaim The Gospel From The Text
    • The gospel is the power to save. It is also what every saved person needs to remind themselves that in all things Christ is our redeemer and our very present help in a time of need.
